What is Meshcore?

MeshCore is an open-source, off-grid communication protocol that allows users to send secure, text-based messages using affordable, handheld LoRa (long-range) radios. It functions entirely without cellular networks, Wi-Fi, or the internet, routing messages from node to node to extend the communication range.

MeshCore differs from Meshtastic by relying on structured “client” and “repeater” roles rather than allowing every device to constantly broadcast. This targeted routing approach prevents network congestion and saves battery life, making it highly scalable for larger metro areas.

Common Use Cases

Private Communications: Creates secure, end-to-end encrypted local networks free from third-party servers or metadata tracking

Emergency & Disaster Preparedness: Essential for first responders and communities when natural disasters destroy cell towers and power grids.

How does Meshcore Work?

Here is exactly how it works:

  • The Setup: You connect your smartphone to a portable LoRa radio device via Bluetooth. Using the MeshCore App, you type a message just like a normal SMS.
  • The Device Roles: Unlike some other mesh systems, MeshCore relies on assigned device roles. Your personal radio (or “companion”) sends your message but does not retransmit data to save its own battery.
  • Repeater Routing: Specialized, strategically placed MeshCore Repeaters (often solar-powered and set on high vantage points) receive your broadcast and relay it across the network.
  • Smart Delivery: When messaging a new contact, the network “floods” the signal to find the recipient. Once the path is found, subsequent messages take that specific, established route to prevent unnecessary network congestion
  • Hardware Compatibility: Runs on inexpensive, off-the-shelf development boards (e.g., ESP32-based boards like Heltec or LilyGo) that often cost around $25.
