What is Bucks Mesh?

The Bucks County mesh radio Group is a community of enthusiasts passionate about mesh radio communications, based in Bucks County Pennsylvania. Our members share a common love for exploring and innovating in the world of mesh networks.

Whether you’re a seasoned radio operator or just curious about mesh communications, you’ll find a community of like minded folks here. We believe that the power of radio and mesh networks transcends geographical boundaries, and we warmly invite anyone with an interest to join us.

There are two competing pieces of software for a mesh network, one is Meshtastic the other is MeshCore.

Both Meshtastic and MeshCore are open-source, LoRa-based networks that allow you to send messages off-grid without cell towers or the internet. However, they differ greatly in network philosophy: Meshtastic is a mobile, plug-and-play ad-hoc network where every user acts as a relay, while MeshCore is a planned, repeater-based infrastructure optimized for larger, structured networks

Key Differences

1. Routing and Network Structure

  • Meshtastic: Uses a decentralized “flooding” model where almost every device (“Client” or “Router”) helps relay and rebroadcast messages across the network. It self-heals dynamically, making it perfect for moving groups (e.g., hikers, tactical squads, or music festivals). [1, 2, 3]
  • MeshCore: Focuses on intentional routing. Handheld or end-user devices do not typically relay traffic; instead, messages are passed along by strategically placed, stationary Repeaters. This structure prevents the network from collapsing due to congestion or accidental user “spam”.

2. Message Hops and Range

  • Meshtastic: Strictly enforces message hop limits (default 3, max 7). This prevents network crashes in mobile environments but can limit total geographic coverage in large, hilly metro areas. [1, 2]
  • MeshCore: Supports up to 64 hops. Your message can chain through a series of stationary repeaters spanning an entire city or region with minimal airtime congestion.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • Choose Meshtastic if: You want to turn on your radio and start communicating immediately with zero setup. It excels for small, tight-knit groups, people on the move (hiking, off-roading, skiing), and anyone who wants to experiment with a large, active community.
  • Choose MeshCore if: You want to build or join a permanent, city-wide, or campus-wide communication grid. If you have access to fixed locations for solar-powered relays, MeshCore scales significantly better, handles urban congestion perfectly, and ensures higher message delivery rates.
