What is Meshtastic?

Meshtastic is an open-source, decentralized, off-grid mesh networking system that uses low-power LoRa radios to create a peer-to-peer communication network without needing internet or cellular service. It allows users to send text messages, GPS coordinates, and other data over long distances in areas with no infrastructure, making it useful for outdoor activities, remote locations, and emergency situations. The hardware is affordable and designed to be low-power, so it can be run on batteries or solar panels

What is Bucks Mesh?

The Bucks County Meshtastic Group is a community of enthusiasts passionate about Meshtastic and mesh radio communications, based in Bucks County Pennsylvania. Our members share a common love for exploring and innovating in the world of mesh networks.

Whether you’re a seasoned radio operator or just curious about mesh communications, you’ll find a community of like minded folks here. We believe that the power of radio and mesh networks transcends geographical boundaries, and we warmly invite anyone with an interest to join us.

Here you’ll find:

  • Active Discussions: Join us on Discord, where we exchange ideas, solve problems, and share our latest projects.
  • On-Air Net: Engage with us through scheduled on-air sessions, where we test and experiment with our mesh networks.
  • Coordinate: We are committed to creating a mesh that covers the whole of bucks county. Allowing decentralized communication and disaster resilience.
  • Inclusive Group: Everyone is welcome, regardless of experience level. Our goal is to foster a space where everyone can learn and grow together.

How it works

  • Mesh network: Meshtastic devices connect to each other to form a mesh network. If one device can’t reach another directly, it can relay the message through other devices in the network until it reaches its destination.
  • LoRa technology: It uses LoRa (long range) radio technology, which is a radio protocol for long-range, low-power communication that does not require a license to operate in most regions.
  • Decentralized: The network is decentralized, meaning there is no central server or single point of failure. Communications are passed from device to device.
  • Applications: It is ideal for use cases such as:
    • Outdoor activities: Hiking, camping, or climbing in areas without cell service.
    • Emergency preparedness: Staying in contact when traditional infrastructure is down.
    • IoT projects: Monitoring conditions in remote areas, like farms.
    • Asset tracking: Monitoring the location of equipment.
